He has had a recurring/has never gone away completely/cyst inflamed raised red bump on hind leg. Was told allergy related last year but has never healed, now worsening and limping last night. Have return visit to vet tomorrow, any suggestions?

Hi Rose!
These cysts often do recurr. Did the vet drain it last year? Often I need to drain them several times, but they usually resolve by themselves over time. Having said that, in your case it does sound like the lump is causing him pain and distress as he is limping so your vet might recommend surgery to have it completely excised. I would put a needle in it first and see what comes out, if there is pus it might be worth treating medically before considering surgery. If there is no fluid or clear fluid I would recommend surgery. It also depends on where on the hindleg it is, and also how big the lump is. Some places on the hindleg has got very little skin and it might be difficult to have the whole lump excised and to close the wound up afterwards.
This is to your vets discretion though, and is difficult for me to tell without seeing the lump. Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

Thank you so much Torunn for your opinion. It has the appearance, if this is any kind of description, of a "volcano" blackened on the sides with a hole or opening in the middle. Red inflammation around the bump, I cut the hairs close last night to get a good look at it, doesn't seem to have spread much but I do have an appt tomorrow with my vet. They wanted to do xrays right away since I mentioned the limping but I requested an exam first. They did not drain it last year, just told me to give him Benedryl from time to time. Thank you very much!!!
