Aural Hematoma

Rating: 10

Hi, I had a cat that developed aural hematoma. When it started it really wasn't that swollen and didn't have any pus present. However, I took the cat to my mother-in-law's so that my other pets wouldn't bother him and he wouldn't contaminate them. The lady that had him decided to take it upon herself (without my knowledge), to drain his ear. She used a dirty, unsterilized jackknife, and needless to say, his ear became severely infected. I called a few times over the next couple of days, and she failed to mention that she had done this. When I stopped by to pick him up to bring him home, his ear was pussing so badly that it was running down his face, and his face was being eaten away, and his ear had almost rotted off his head. I was absolutely devestated and broke down, but knew that he had to be euthanized because he was in so much pain. He could barely walk and could barely make a sound. So I had him put down, hardest decision of my life but I knew it had to be done. My question is, did this stupid woman kill my cat? Would he have been okay if she had just left him alone like I told her to? He had another vet appointment three days later, but didn't live to see it. Am I justified in saying that this lady was the cause of his death?

Well the ear needed to be drained but not by her, by a vet. The ear would have been fine until you got him to a vet where they could have treated him accordingly. She was however the cause of the infection according to the story I that  read. I do think the best decision was made in the end in this case. I know it is very hard to cope with the loss of a loved one but I will tell you from personal experience here lately with my pets it does and will get easier.  I am truley sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope this answer makes it easier. Please dont forget to rate my answer. Thanks and god bless. Amy

Thank you so much for getting back to me on this. I felt really guilty about what happened and really only asked for my own peace of mind. I have lost a few beloved pets these past few months, but really his death was the worst of all of them. I really appreciate all you guys do. Thanks a lot!!
