Coughing dog

Rating: 0

My 2 year old rat terrier is coughing. She started this about 2 weeks ago and it seems to have gotten worse. She acts like she has something in her throat and is trying to cough it out. She has NOT been kenneled at all. She's 8 pounds, in good health, eats and drinks normally. She seems to make a small little honking sound when she is sniffing on the ground, like when she extends her neck and head.

This could indicate several things.  It's possible that she simply has a viral tracheitis (viral upper respiratory infection).  Most of these simply run their course over 7-10 days.  Sometimes they can progress to a secondary bacterial infection and require antibiotics.  It's important that a vet see her to determine if this is the case.  Other causes of coughing can be heartworm disease, pneumonia and heart related disorders.  Many of the more serious diseases need to be ruled out so I would definitely advise taking her to the vet when you can.
