My cat smells like moth balls, but he doesn't venture out of my yard; I haven't used moth balls for antyhing. Any ideas?

The smell might be discharge from his anal glands. This is something dogs suffer from more than cats, but if they do empty into the fur around the anus then the smell can be very strong. I wouldn't describe it as moth balls, more a musky smell, but if it is originating from his back end then it may be that.
I would try shampooing him with a pet shampoo.
