New Puppy needs help!

Hello, I just adopted a new puppy who has acquired hook worm. I brought him to the vet who put him on a 3 day deworming medication along with anti biotics and 7 days worth of prescription wet food. He finished the 3 day dewormer and today is his last application of the anti biotic. I'm still nervous about him because his stools haven't firmed up at all. I set another appointment for him today to go back to the vet for a follow up. I plan on feeding him some yogurt for the natural cultures and some canned pumpkin for the fiber for the rest of the week.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that may help diet-wise? I am hoping for another three day dewormer or something even more aggressive because I worry about his nutrition levels.

Also, I have been bathing him daily because he continues to smell from the diareah. He's very good in the bath and enjoys himself but yesterday I took him out and wrapped him up in a towel and held him and he just started shuddering and shaking. His little heart was racing and I started to panic! Do you think he was just cold? He started what sounded like hyperventaliting soon after and then got the hiccups...

Any advice is welcome! He is my first dog (I also have a 6 year old cat) and I want to make sure he is as healthy and happy as possible! Thanks!!!

Congratulations on your new pup, he is adorable. It is not uncommon for parasites to be a problem especially in a young puppy. I am assuming they put him on panacur dewormer for the 3 days. How did they check the stool sample do you know? ( you may not) but certain methods for checking stool are better than others eg a zinc sulfate centrifugation is better than a fecal float test. Did they check for giardia? this is a very common parasite I see in puppies and is a separate test from the regular fecal. I become more suspicious of this especially if they don't respond to meds like they should. It is also possible that the hook worms haven't gone too. Does he eat his own stool? ( gross I know but many pups do and reinfect themselves with the parasite!) What food did they put him on? and is he gaining weight? You are doing the right thing with the pumpkin it really can be a great help. You are also doing the right thing bathing him, if he is dirty you have to! Yes he may have been cold yesterday and he could also have panicked a little. I would just make sure he is warm enough if he goes out especially after a bath.

Thanks Angela! I am unsure how they checked the stool sample...He was brought back in for another exam yesterday and they are now checking for Giardia. We pick up the yard after he goes out there but since the stools are loose there may still be some hanging around. He eats everything on the ground so I suspect that he does eat his own feces. We try to pull him away before he actually opens his mouth after sniffing but I'm sure that's not entirely effective! His was on an I/D diet last week and now is on a W/D high fiber diet. I just started him on the canned pumpkin mixed in with the high fiber prescription food last night and he loved it. I will buy him some plain yogurt tonight and start adding that to his afternoon meal. I can't tell yet if he has gained weight...he wasn't weighted yesterday but was the week before and was a little over 8 lbs. He seems healthy and active and full of energy so once we get the intestinal thing taken care of, I'm sure he will be up to speed with everything! Thanks again for the information!
