Parvo Disinfecting

Second parvo-related question: What's my best option for disinfecting the small area of grass we were using to house train our puppy that died from parvo? It's been bleached the best we can in the middle of winter but is right outside our front door. Is there an age we can relax once our new puppy reaches it? We are waiting until the new pup reaches 11 weeks and has her third vaccination before bringing her home. Both are Shorkie mixes.

    Hi,

You are right to be concerned. Parvovirus is extremely resistant. Bleach is effective at killing it, but this will kill the grass too! Extensive watering of the area concerned (assuming there is good drainage) will reduce the number of virus particles. The virus is shed in the feces - if your previous infected puppy was passing feces there, I would probably use a different piece of grass to house train your new puppy. Vaccination is essential and effective, but vaccine failures do occasionally occur. It may be several months before the grass is completely free of parvovirus particles.
