Ammonia Smell Coming From Mouth

I have a 1 year old male, Chihuahua named Gizmo! He weighs 6 1/2 pounds! He is not Neutered! Yesterday, for the first time ever, I noticed a very strong Ammonia smell coming from Gizmo's mouth! It was there all day! When I went to check to see if the smell was still there this morning when I got up, the Ammonia smell was totally gone. There was no ammonia smell whatsoever, coming from Gizmo's mouth! He has an appointment with the vet this coming Tuesday, for bloodwork, to see if there is something wrong. In the meantime, I was wondering it you can give me some kind of an idea, what is causing this Ammonia smell and why it's there one day and gone the next? I heard that an Ammonia smell coming from the mouth, is a sign of a serious illness and I'm very scared! Gizmo has Not been vomiting at all, has normal and regular bowel movements, his urine is normal color, he is eating normal, and drinking normal, but looks a little thin and like he's not really gaining any weight! You can very Faintly see his ribs, but he's always been thin! He's very active and does not act at all, like he is not feeling good! Is there anything, I need to do, if I smell the Ammonia again? Can you help me please? Thank You for your time! I'm looking forward to hearing back from you! Have A Great Day!

Could be a food or treat he ate, or something he was playing with gave his breath the odd smell. Look in his mouth to make sure nothing is stuck or wrapped around his teeth at the gum line, or that he has baby teeth that don't want to come out. If he looks and acts fine, you should be able to wait till Tues.

Ten years ago I started using nutrition to help resolve many common and chronic ailments, and now dietary/nutrition counseling is part of my treatment. I have a new book, called Dog Dish Diet: Sensible Nutrition for Your Dog's Health and a blog.
