Hi there - when was Lucky put on the r/d diet??  When my patients reach their weight-loss goals via r/d, I usually switch them over to w/d for maintenance - w/d is higher in fiber but r/d is less in calories.  R/d is a complete diet, I have some patients on it for life, but some dogs and cats get very large, firm stools with it and can't tolerate it forever.  These pets I switch to w/d.  Hope this helps!

Has your vet checked Lucky's thyroid hormone level in his blood? If he has been on r/d for 2 years and still isn't losing weight, I wonder if he might be hypothyroid. The loose skin, you will never get rid of - and it isn't a medical concern, what is most concerning is that he get into the proper weight range so he will live longer!

I mentioned Lucky has hypothyroism. The vet put him on Thyroxyn, started with 0.4 mg, now takes 0.7; 1 pill once a day, half every 12 hours (half in morning, half at night). He's been on the thyroid medication since 2006. The vet says they won't do another thyroid test (blood work). He's not losing any weight (maybe 4 lbs in two years). I've attached a photo of Lucky... top is at 1 year old, bottom is a recent photo. He's been eating Hills Vet Diet R/D for two years. He's not active. Any suggestions?

I sometimes have better luck getting dogs to lose weight on the canned version of a particular diet, simply because it has more moisture content, which fills them up quicker with less calories.  I would recommend trying him on the canned version of R/d and consider a re-check of his thyroid hormone if possible.

I would do the canned alone, 1 can twice daily.  Slentrol is an option, it is safe when used properly,. yes.  Personally, I have not any success with the product, but it is certainly something you can try!  Best of luck.
