Cat w/ third eyelid showing

Rating: 9

my 4 mo. old kitten has had his 3rd eyelid showing for about 4-5 weeks. He's frequently licking his bottom but I see no worms nor any in his stool. He has had a few loose stools with a little vomit as well. He's also much thinner than his sister. Now my other cats have their 3rd eyelid showing, upset tummies and sneezing. Vet at the animal shelter said nothing is wrong but my gut feeling is otherwise.

Symptoms: Sneezing, Vomiting, Diarrhea

Many times when the third eyelid shows continuosly in cats it can mean they've had a virus or large worm load earlier in life. If it is accompanied by loose stool and/or vomiting the cats may have some type of virus at this time. I would bring them to a veterinarian for an exam and fecal exam. If you feel that there is something wrong with them and the shelter's vet said otherwise, you can bring them to a different veterinarian and see what they have to say. This would be advisable as you had said the other catsa are now showing the same symtoms. I always suggest that all kittens have a fecal exam to see if there are any parasite eggs or parasites that may not be visible in their stool by the naked eye. An exam is always a good idea to ensure that cat is healthy, and in this case will help determine the cause of your kittens' symptoms.

If the third eyelid is showing all the time it is definitely a problem. You need to have your cat checked by a veterinarian. However, my cat likes to have his ears rubbed and when I do it his third eyelid shows because he is so relaxed. As soon as I stop it goes away which indicates that there is no problem that can be detected in this way. He is a very healthy boy, which I know because he does see his doctor on a yearly basis.

To the person with the cat who had the string hanging out of it's butt...sounds like the cat ate some string which made him/her sick which caused the third eyelids to show. If the string is no longer visible but the cat still looks sick, take him/her to the vet. There may be some other piece of material still inside the intestines causing a problem and it could be serious. When my cat ate about a foot and 1/2 of dental floss the vet said to bring her in. They tried to induce vomitting but it didn't work. They said to give her that hairball remedy goo (Petromalt, Laxatone, etc.) until the floss passed. It worked and the floss passed out of her all balled-up in about a day and 1/2. Easy as pie. They said it could have tangled up with the intestinal contents and become serious and required surgery, so it was quite a relief to see it come out all at once. Sounds like your cat ate something that isn't passing smoothly and it could be life threatening. I would take him/her to a vet NOW.
