I have a cat that is about 11 years old. Every few months he goes through a period of a couple of weeks where he urinates around the house. It normally lasts for a couple of weeks and then is fine for a couple of months. This been going on for the last 5 years or so. Does this sound like a behavioral problem, or could this be a medical problem?

It is important that he is checked by a vet for any related medical problems. If he gets the all clear it may be that for some reason he feels threatened and wants to increase his sense of security. Perhaps there is another cat making a move through his territory? You don’t say whether he is spraying (standing up and squirting urine) or squatting just releasing it as he would if he was just having a wee. It is also important to see whether he is straining at all and this will have to be looked into by your vet.

You could try increasing his sense of security by taking a towel that he has slept on and using it like a duster to spread more appropriate scent around the places he generally urinates on.

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
