What can I do for pain?

Hi I have a pet dwarf rabbit of about 4 years old. He is free to roam the garden, stays outside, never uses any form of shelter I make for him and is a pleasure to hold and fondle :) Last week I noticed an inflamed eye and took him to the vet. In South Africa we don’t generally have bunnies as pets so our vets are not as clued up as the UK vets.

He has severe “UV-it is” or something and over the past week his eye has filled with puss despite drops being administered 4-8 times a day… he is eating bags of celery and some pellets, is right off carrots, his eye is now swollen and rheumy, the fur is thinning around it (maybe from scratching, not too sure) and they are talking about removing it – with all the attendant risks involved viz vascular network… I am torn… the vet has put him on penicillin which I will now inject every two days, but I am distressed beyond belief as they are telling me to expect the worst as penicillin can kill rabbits… What can they do differently and is there any pain-killer that they can use with penicillin – they are adverse to the possibility of a complication with the combination with penicillin… PLEASE can someone help me? I LOVE this bunny and would hate to lose him.

Unfortunately I have no camera so I cannot upload a pic.

Thank you Kim

Rabbits unlike dogs and cats form very thick pus when they have an infection. Penicillin in injectable form is usually well tolerated in rabbits. Oral penicillin can be fatal to rabbits. Depending on Hutch's level of health, surgery may be the best option if there is no improvement with the penicillin injection. Removal of an eye is usually a pretty straight forward procedure and most pets do quite well with only one eye. The question of course would be how well Hutch tolerates anesthesia. Rabbits again are unique, but can do quite well with anesthetics and recovery from a surgical procedure. Hutch would need to kept indoors so that the area stays clean and dry, and may also be something to consider right now, while attempting treatment. If treatment does not work, then surgery to remove the eye would be your next option. As far as pain control goes, you would need to contact your veterinarian, there are definetly some medications that can be given orally,or drops for the eye that help with discomfort. I wish you the best with Hutch, bunnies are great little pets!
