Hi, my 5 yr old male is just now starting to knaw at places in his fur creating patches.

The most likely explanation for this is an external parasite in the fur or skin- probably fleas or mites. Can you get a spot-on from your vet which treats both? If you look closely at his fur you should be able to spot fleas, but mites aren't visible to the naked eye. If there are no parasites and he still itches, he may have an allergy problem, but the most common allergy is to the fleas themselves.
