neutering complications?

Rating: 10

My puppy Freddie was neutered on Friday. It is now Tuesday and he is increasingly uncomfortable. He whines and squeals and tries to lick at the incision so he's been wearing the e-collar ever since the surgery. I took him to the emergency clinic on Sunday but all she could offer was pain meds. Took him to the vet Monday where they kept him all day and administered pain meds as well. Now he's home, gave him the codeine and the other medicine (something-cam?) but he is still in a lot of discomfort. Could it be something other than just post-op pain? He seems to be getting depressed now because he is helpless to relieve the situation. His appetite has been good until dinner last night and still no sign of infection. I feel like he should be getting better but this is just going on and on. What if there's something else wrong??

    Hi

As long as there is no infection (look for signs of discharge, swelling or pus at the incision site) then I would not worry too much. Dogs can act depressed because of the plastic e-collar (it stops them relieving that itch by licking it, which WOULD cause an infection/wound breakdown), but it clearly the lesser of 2 evils. The incision should have fully healed by 10 days post op so you can take the collar off then.
