Seizures

Rating: 9
Sierra
Sierra

Sierra has been on medication for her seizures for approx 8 months. She hadn't had one since early october and suddenly has had two this week. Could the potassium bromide lose its potency? It was almost to the end of the bottle. I am just searching for answers.

Hi. It's not necessarily that the drug becomes less potent, but sometimes the disease progresses and the 'seizure threshold' is reduced, therefore more/or different medication might be required. But it may not necessarily be the case, somtimes a cluster occurs and then everything settles down again. Monitor the situation for now, but when you get the next lot of medication it's worth having a chat with the vet. Good luck.

I have heard about cluster seizures but I thought that they happen one after another in the same day. She doesnt have severe seizures-in fact we don't see the seizure, but the after affects last for several hours. She loses her urine, her balance is off, but she will run outside and than come back and continue to be off balance and just not herself. She is tense but not rigid, almost hyper sensitive, flinches alot. I try not to feed her anything that can set off her sodium levels so the meds are properly obsorbed and its just frustrating when she gets them... The first one was when she was three and than she didnt have one for another year and than she had several so she was put on the meds. She has just turned 5. Any thing you can suggest is helpful. Thank you

I sympathise with your frustration! It sounds as though she is doing well though. What you describe after a seizure sounds normal, although it's not nice for her or you. As the seizures are not the severest kind, it's preferable not to overdo medication, as that can bring problems of it's own. It's always a delicate balancing act, but i don't think you can do more than you already are doing.
