My 1 year old chihuahua mix just threw up bile with a few flecks of blood in it. Can I hold out a few more hours until our vet is open, or go to the emergency vet???

Hi there, A one off episode of vomiting is not a veterinary emergency. In fact, even with 'specs' of blood in it, it is questionable whether a one off episode of vomiting even necessitates a trip to the clinic. I would suggest starving your dog for 24hrs, then offer chicken and rice in small portions for several days. This bland food helps not to irritate the inflamed stomach wall. If your dog vomits several times, has diarrhea, seems lethargic or cannot hold down water, then you do need to take her to see a vet. If it is just gastritis (or gastroenteritis if there is also diarrhea) then an anti-vomiting injection such as Marcopitant may be given, plus a course of antibiotics. If the dog is dehydrated, the symptoms are severe or the abdomen feels abnormal, then further tests will be done. Good luck!
