9 month old lab has just started excessive drooling, vet has suggested a visit because something may be wrong- but what? what should I know before our visit?

There's a good chance that Morgan bit into something that did not taste good to him. This setting off his excessive salivation. Did you try rinsing out his mouth with plain water? You can use a turkey baster for this... or the hose if he's not afraid of it. If after you rinse his mouth and dry his face off, he's still salivating, he should go to your veterinarian.
Excessive salivation, if not stopped, can over time lead to dehydration. Whatever has caused this reaction could still be in his mouth as well. Don't waste too much time if this is continuing.
