eye problems

Rating: 8
Bandhu
Bandhu

I have a 4 year old Golden Retriever.
He has no health problems.
He recently developed an eye condition.
His eyes - both of them - got sunken in
and rolled up. His eye pressures are very
low in both eyes. His third eyelid is up.
He can bring his eye balls down for short
periods of time, but seems like this takes
a lot of effort. Has anyone ever seen or
heard of anything like this????
The Vet is unsure what is going on.
He is on steroid eye drops and pills.
If anyone knows anything, please help me!

This does sound like an unusual neurological problem. Is he responding to the treatment he's been given? Did he have any other physical problems when he was examined? It may be that some more diagnostic work may be required to find out what's going on if he doesn't respond to treatment. It sounds like the nerve supply to the eyes is affected, but if both eyes are equally affected it suggests something quite complex.

The inflammation on the outside of the eyes has gone done with being on the steroids. Today is the 5th day of steroids. His eye pressure today was 6 in one eye, and 7 in the other. (still low) His eyes look better overall, but he still rolls them up and his lids droop, off and on. He seems tired, and doesn't want to play or wrestle with my other Golden. He is eating well. He had bloodwork done today, so we should get results tomorrow. I'm so worried about him. The Vet said it's unusual for both eyes to be effected. I asked if it could be something with his brain? She didn't think so. But, I wonder.... It really has me scared!

I can understand you being scared, anything like this is a big worry. But the fact that he's shown some improvement is a very good sign. It isn't possible to rule out a brain lesion from what you've described, but even if there were, it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad or incurable. Let me know what the blood results are. Depending on the results and how he's doing they may recommend a scan, but it would likely be expensive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

The blood test results showed the Liver count was elevated. All the other levels were Ok. Today we took him in for chest and abdominal X-rays. These were normal, the only thing that looked like it might be inflammed, was the spleen. The Vet also did two more blood tests, one to check for muscle deteriation and one tick blood test. (to check for Lyme disease, etc..) Bandhu has lost 7 lbs. in 6 days, and he is eating normally. He seems hungry a lot. His face and head look different to us, the bone on top of his head is protruding a lot more, and his face looks skinny. The steroid eye drops have helped his eyes greatly, they look almost normal now. He is still lazy and isn't interested in playing with my other Golden. I guess the plan now is to wait to get the two blood test results from today, and in the meantime I am to make an appointment with a Vet. internist. My Vet says there is something going on, and isn't sure what, and doesn't want it to progress. It's really frustrating to see your dog, who is so, so young, declining in front of you....and there doesn't seem to be any answers for it.

Helen, I took Bandhu to an Internist at a Vet. clinic. She did two more blood tests - one for toxoplasma and one for immune mediated disease with muscle wasting specifically. I should get those back in a week. I am hoping one of these show up positive, because she feels that if it isn't one of these two things..... it is looking like it could be lymphoma. :-{ She said the liver and spleen were larger than they should be on the x-ray. She also agreed that his face and head looks like he's losing muscle. She did the two blood tests, and also said to take him off the steroids, and she will touch bases with me in a week. I will keep you posted. I am spending a lot of time with him, since I don't know what the future holds. Judi

Thanks for updating me, i hope it turns out not to be lymphoma, rather something with a better prognosis. It sounds like he's in very good hands. It would be great if you'd let us know what the blood results show re:toxo and autoimmune disease.
