Compulsive scratching

She is scratching over and over on newspapers (shredding then into strips) and bed cover. She has always done this ocassionally, but now she seems to be doing it every hour or so. Also, she seems to be urinating just a little on the shredded paper. She is also using the litter box, which I clean 2X/day. Do I need to take her to a vet?

Hi Gillian Firstly since she seems to be doing this every hour It is important to get her checked out by a vet for any urinary problems. It sounds as if she is using the newspapers as an equivalent to litter and may have formed a preference for the feel of the paper. Do you also use newspaper in the tray or do you use a different substrate you can buy? You can change her preference just be gradually replacing the litter you want in very small stages so she gradually gets used to it. However, every hour is very excessive and must be seen as soon as possible. Rosie Barclay

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
