My dog loses his hair around the butt and between the back legs. He does not smell so good.

Your dog more than likely has a skin allergy. Check for fleas really well too. If you're smelling an odor, it could be a bacterial infection caused from scratching and chewing at himself. It could be yeast, or it could also be anal glands.
