My daughter pulled on our gerbil's tail and it broke off. What do I do now? Do I need to see a vet?

no, you do not need to see a vet. his tail will fall off and heal on it's own, most of the time. It's usual for him to loose his balance a little even years after he looses his tail. I've had this happen to me, so all I can say is most of the time, it will heal on it's own. If he usually lives in the same cage as another gerbil, it's a good idea to buy another small cage to put the injured one in, because usually, when a gerbil lives with another gerbil, if one of them is bleeding, the other one will smell it and they will fight until one of them is dead. Not always, though.
