back pain lethargy

HI my dog was with my mom's husband and got hug by his leash over the fence - for a few minutes. He already had arthritis in is back. Now there seems to be a bump in his back and he is lethargic. Is his back just more sore or could this be something else? Also increased panting.

Hi, This lump you describe is probably just bruising, or a hematoma. He has suffered a traumatic experience so some soft tissue injury is to be expected. If this is the case, a shot of an anti-inflammatory medication should sort him out (unless he is already on arthritis drugs). More worrying would be if there has been some spinal damage, such as a slipped disc. This is potentially dangerous so I would advise having him checked by a vet, who can do a full neurological exam to look for signs of spinal injury.
