my parents dog is 4 years old and has been drinking a crazy amount of water and started to urinate in her sleep. this has been going on for a few weeks. she has been to the vet and told it's normal. she was given medicine... don't know what. she is now shaking and panting... acting a bit weird... have you ever heard of anything like this? what could it be?

    From my experience, the symptoms seem to be those of a Diabetic.  Even though Gracie hasn't had problems before, diabetes can start at any age. Next time you go to your vet ask them about a Glucose Curve.  You would need to fast Gracie and leave her with them for the day so they can test blood sugar every so often.  I am not a Veterinarian by any means but as I stated before, from my experience in the past with identical symptoms it almost always turned out to be diabetes and don't think it's the end of the world.  There are ways to treat diabetes other then just insulin.  You should talk to you Veterinarian about them.
