My 11month old male Akita woke up this morning throwing up white foamy mucus. He is not his usual playful self. He is just laying around. Will not eat or drink. What should I do? Concerned mom..........

If Buddy is not eating or drinking...AND is lethargic.  I would recommend getting him into see your veterinarian.  Anytime our pets stop eating and drinking, it's time to seek professional assistance.   Animals can get seriously dehydrated pretty quickly.  Your veterinarian can assess his need for fluid replacement.

The white foam could be from excessive salivation due to nausea that he is swalloing.  If he is  having any coughing or gagging when he vomits this white foam...it could be signs of Kennel Cough.  If Buddy has been in a keennel situation, daycare, groomers..even local parks, there is an oportunity for exposure.

Definately see your vet if these symptoms have continued...

    All the best,

I would definitely get him to a vet, especially if he has been outside recently and may have gotten into anything. It could be an indication of a serious problem or that he may have ingested something. Not knowing where you live or if you live in the city or country limits my ability to answer at this point. Depending on your location and situation, accidental access to chemicals could be a possibility. Hope he recovers. Dan

For anyone who experiences a similar problem, get your dog to the vet immediately!! As the previous posts mentions, it sounds like he is having a toxic reaction to something he ingested. That's speaking from experience. My dog had very similar symptoms which went away the next morning, but in hindsight, we believe she ingested some antifreeze fluid which tastes like candy to them but is extremely toxic and likely fatal if not treated immediately. In the case of antifreeze poisoning, the vet can treat the dog with a liquid charcoal mix which basically absorbs the toxins and the dog can have a full recovery, but there is a narrow window of time where that can be effective, usually a few hours. After that, the toxins do permanent damage and, in my case, our dog suffered kidney failure over the course of six months and had to be put to sleep. Worst thing in the world... Not trying to use scare tactics here, but if your pet ever appears sick to that degree, do NOT hesitate to bring it to a vet asap. Many things can be treated effectively if done so quickly, but time is key, and inaction can be fatal.
