curious about green mucus

I am currently fostering condi, and was told by the shelter staff that she has kennel cough and is on antibiotics. Only, she isn't coughing, but occasionally has what sounds like choking fits (like when a dog eats or drinks too quickly). But, her nose is constantly filled with bright green mucus--does that sound like kennel cough to you? Appetite and exercise are unaffected.

Kennel Cough is usually a dry, tickly cough. It can indeed sound like the dog is choking. However, kennel cough dogs don't usually have green mucoid discharge from their nostrils. That would suggest an established bacterial infection, so she should complete her course of antibiotics, and you should wipe away the mucus where possible. Bear in mind Kennel Cough is just a broad term for any contagious cause of tracheobronchitis, rather than a specific disease caused by a specific pathogen.

I have just sent you a message regarding my dog who is constantly coughing as though he is trying to bring up phelm. I have taken him to the blue cross in victoria last year an they told me that his tubes were narrowing but it just sounds like he has got phelm in his chest . Would a course of antibiotics help him. Im getting really worried and cannot afford to take him to a private vet. His name is Raphael.

    Hi

If it is kennel cough, which is a dry cough not a chesty cough, then it is self limiting. A course of antibiotics will help if it is kennel cough or a bacterial pneumonia (lung infection). However, if it is a heart problem then antibiotics won't help at all. The only way to diagnose a heart problem is to listen carefully with a stethoscope - and possibly take a chest xray. You should take him to a vet for an examination - if you are on benefits then you are eligible for the PDSA, or try the Blue Cross or RSPCA.

    Good luck
