Sleep Issues

The past few nights our dog Cody has had trouble sleeping. After we put him to bed in his crate he begins to whimber, whine and finally starts to bark. Normally he will quiet down in a few minutes however, the last 2 night I have had to sleep next to him in order for him to sleep. However the minute that I tried to get up the whimpering started again.
I am thrown for a loop on what we could do to help him sleep?!

Hi there, This sounds like attention seeking behavior to me. Although your dog is 8 months old, and may have been able to sleep there fine before these past few nights, if he does get a response from you then it reinforces the behavior as he thinks it works. As long as he has passed feces and urine before being crated at night, and assuming he is bright and well with no other signs of disease, I would advise putting in ear plugs and leaving him alone until the morning! Insomnia has never been documented in dogs so don't worry about his lack of sleep. As a dog he can take a nap during the day if he is tired.
