I have a kitten that is about 12 weeks old. Her right eye seems to be infected, or at least it is mattering up badly and is a bit weepy. What can I do for her?

Hi there, thanks for the question. I would advise that you have your kitten examined by a vet asap as eyes are quite delicate and prolonged infection can lead to long-term damage. From the picture, it does look like her eye is infected and probably quite uncomfortable. Is the other eye ok? Is she sneezing or does she have any nasal discharge? Is she well in herself otherwise? There are some viral/bacterial infections seen in kittens that can cause runny eyes. Usually both eyes are affected and sometimes you see respiratory (sneeze, etc) signs. The other possibility is that she has had some trauma to the eye with some damage to the cornea or a foriegn body (grass seed, etc) stuck in the eye and in these cases, the sooner they get to a vet the better. In the meantime you can clean her eye regularily with boiled (cooled) water to try and keep it clear- soak some cotton wool and squeeze gently over the eye, and please do not touch the other eye with the same cotton wool. Hope this helps!!

Thank you. I will also get some neosporin, as my Vet has had me use that before and it is less costly than a Vet visit. My husband died recently and this kitten was abandoned, and I have no extra money. If, of course this kittens eye gets worse, I will take her to the Vet, but hope I don't have to. It does look better today, as I did wipe her eye clean last night.
