I have an approximately 10 year old biscon-poodle mix dog that is taking Proin Drops 25 mg. I give it to her twice a day. It seems to work most of the time, but sometimes she is still dripping. My question is, will this ever get better? Will she always need this medicine, and do I have to increase the amount I give her over time? Any side affects? She has seizures, (not severe enough to take meds) she is deaf, is now having trouble with her eye, and has had (last year) 14 teeth pulled. My poor little girl!! I would appricate your opinion. Thank You

I'm not the expert on Proin, but I'm familiar with the product. It's not uncommon for her to still "drip" on the medication, and yes, it's possible she may need a higher dose. She may also need to be put on another medication, DES (diethylstilbestrol) which can also help with sphincter control/urinary incontinence. It's a female hormone (like estrogen) that works well in spayed females for incontinence.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely she will ever "get better." Incontinence is caused by lack of sphincter muscle control; the meds do their best to help the muscles, but the older she gets, the harder it is going to be to make any improvements. So - yes, she will probably have to be on Proin for the rest of her life. I'm not sure what the side effects are; you'll have to check with your vet on that one.

Sounds like you're doing everything you can to take care of your little one; keep up the good work! I hope she continues to do well, and good luck !
