lump - possible abscess?

Rating: 10

My dog was seen at the vet today about her lump on her hind quarter. The lump is huge and really soft in some spots and really black in the soft spots. The vet did a needle biopsy and said she has bacteris inside and she's on antibiotics. My concern is she has a small open wound on it and it sometimes oozes and bleeds. Should I be concerned it my burst and if it does is it dangerous?

Hi, I am unclear as to the result of the biopsy the vet did. The presence of bacteria may mean an abscess, but could also be an infected cyst or tumor. It is impossible to give a prognosis without knowing the cause. This can probably only be determined by taking a sample of tissue from the lump surgically, and sending it off for histopathology. If the cause is a bacterial infection, it may be that this particular bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic your pet is being given. YOu might also consider picking up some chlorhexidine or iodine wash from a pharmacy, to clean the lump externally with. Good luck

she got rushed to the vet this morn cause her lump burst. The vet was able to remove most of the lump except the outer margines. The vet has a bad feeling it's cancer and it will probaly grow back. I'll know in 72 hours the results of the biopsy. Is there any way to keep the lump from returning?
