Dog Chews Leg

Rating: 8

I have a 10 year old Brittany Spaniel and he has been licking his right hind leg since August. We have gone to the vet and was given bitter apple (he licked it off), Prednisone (no help) and even wrapped his leg with gauze and covered it with deodorant to deter him from licking. Nothing works. He has now licked a sore on his leg. The vet says that he does this for similar reasons humans bite their nails. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid he's going to lick his leg off. Thank you for your time.

Sometimes, especially after a length of time has passed, the licking can become a habit. One thing, he could be bored and he has nothing better to do than lick that area. You could try using an elizabethian collar (resembles a lampshade) to help prevent him licking that area, to give it a chance to heal. You may want to do a little investigating with the vets in your area, to see if any of them have a theraputic laser. The theraputic laser helps to promote healing. I have had good results with it on this type of wound at my practice.

I would at least start with the e-collar.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
