I am planning on getting a shorkie puppy (Yorkie, shihtzu mix) and i was wondering is a dog is predisposed to certain genetic illnesses does that mean that dog will most likely experience them and if so what in terms of daily care and nutrition can be done to prevent them

Smaller breed dogs tend to have dental issues. You can help those by brushing teeth, routine dental cleanings, and hard food to help keep the tartar from building up on the teeth. With genetics, it's a kind of a "crap shoot". The potential is there for problems but there is no guarantee that the pup will/will not have the problem. I would recommend researching for a reputable breeder. Go inspect the facilities, the parents of the puppy and armed with questions. Inquire about the parents health/issues etc.

Good luck and hope you find your new puppy soon.
