Is diet or exercise better to help my dog lose weight?

I have an 8yo pomeranian who is overweight. The only exercise she gets is a daily game of indoor fetch. I'd like to take her for walks, but whenever I do she develops a limp that lasts for at least a couple hours. Her diet consists of dog food (we free-feed), egg yolks, and several dog treats daily. Given these facts, what's the best way to get her weight problem under control--diet or exercise? Thanks!

    Hi Buffy,

Both exercise and a good diet are essential for helping her lose weight. It would be worthwhile to pop along to your vets and ask them to recommend a diet plan for her and a good quality diet food. Weightloss may help her limp. In the meantime, cut out all the treats and just give her biscuits from her meal ration if she is making you feel guilty. She ideally will only need a couple of meals a day. Your vet or nurse will be able to assess her for you and put her on a programme which will keep her healthy whilst losing the excess pounds.

    Hope this helps,

    Clare
