One of them looks shaved

Rating: 0

I have two dwarf hamsters (I don't remember exactly what breed but they are very tiny). One of them looks like they have been shaved on the back half and all up the belly. She doesn't seem to be itchy or anything, and the other has had no hair loss. I really can't afford to take my hamsters to the vet, so I was seeking advice. I thought it might be mange, but I figured if it were mange then the other one would be experiencing hair lose too. As this is not the case, I was wondering what it could be. It happened about a week ago. I have been very careful to wash my hands after dealing with them just in case it is mange as I know certain types of those mites can transfer to humans. Any advice?

Hi there! After reading this..the only thing that comes to mind is that this hampster seems healthy other than the hair loss? If she is eating and drinking and urinating and defecating normally then there must be an underlying cause for the acute hair loss and we won't really know what that might be unless a Veterinarian works her up with a full examination and possibly bloodwork as well. Great that she's not itching also. I would keep an eye on her to ensure that she continues to eat and drink normally, is breathing with no increased effort, her stool and urinations stay normal and if this spreads to the other hampster then you will definitely have to have her seen but I would for the time being keep an eye on her. My first reaction may be to separate the two being that we don't know what this is. A Veterinary visit would be the best way to get the answers you need. Think really hard about any changes that you have made like bedding, if your bathing your hampster what are you using etc.
