Diabetes insipidus is when a dog cannot produce the hormone ADH in its pituitary gland. This means it struggles to reabsorb water that is filtered out through its kidneys. This is different to diabetes mellitus, which is to do with insulin shortage. Diabetes insipidus is very rare, so unless your dog has undergone alot of other tests already, it is an unlikely diagnosis. The treatment is either to do nothing but ensure water is always freely available, or to apply synthetic ADH (desmopressin) via nasal drops.
