what kind of shampoo can i buy over the counter for my dog. she has demodectic mange and i cannot afford to take her to the vet.

The best treatments are ivermectin (not for use in any herding breeds!) or amitraz (mitaban). You will need to consult your veterinarian as to the best course of action. Under your vets guidance you could try interceptor also.
Unfortunately I cannot advise you to treat without consulting a vet first to double check this is the problem at hand. How was demodex diagnosed?

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
