Is Surgery Needed?

My dog is always taking unusual items and swallowing them. He has never been affected by them. Recently he began vomitting quite a bit. I took him to the vet where he had an xray. A round object the vet thinks is a coin was shown in his stomach. He is acting himself now and is eating. A follow up xray showed that the object is still there although moved slightly. Surgery was suggested. It will cost $1500 which I cannot afford. What are my options.

Copper coins can be toxic to pets if left. I have never seen a copper toxicity in my career but that is always a potential concern. I would probably have a look with an endoscope (flexible camera) first to see if it could be retrieved without the need for surgery. Hope that helps, david

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
