I came home from work today and my dogs face was swollen around her mouth. She also has what looks like hives on her stomach. My husband gave her a Benadryl and it took some of the swelling down. She seems to be breathing fine and she did eat her dinner and drank some water. What could have caused something like this to happen?

This sounds like an allergic reaction to most commonly an insect bite (ant, bee, wasp etc). Benadryl is an antihistamine so thats why it brought the swelling down so quickly. Glad she is ok... David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
