My 10 year old Jack Russell has knots in both sides of his neck, what could this be?

It could be several things. First of all, it could be swollen lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are located under the jaw on either side of the neck. It depends where on the neck the swelling is located. Swollen lymph nodes can be caused by infection, inflammation or neoplasia (cancer). Most times in older dogs I see swollen lymph nodes caused by infections from the mouth. If your dog has a foul odor in its mouth and excessive tartar it could certainly be infection. A veterinarian can aspirate the lymph nodes and determine what the probable cause is and treat it appropriately.
