Our dog has sudden swelling under her eye and just behind her nose. What could this be? I did give her a few scraps of pork after dinner and a bite of instant mashed potato. That's the only thing I can think of that is different.

A swelling could be indicative of several processes. It could be an area of inflammation, infection or proliferation. This means that an infection could be caused from several things (infected tooth, insect sting, puncture wound, etc.). Inflammation may be associated with an infection or trauma. And proliferative tissue (meaning tissue that grows excessively) can be associated with any number of these processes. My best guess is if this dog is older and has some periodontal disease then the teeth need to be investigated as a cause.
