Usually in a dog this small the knee does not bear a large amount of weight.  Many small dogs with luxating patellas go their whole lives without correction.  Larger dogs experience more pain because of their size.  In the mean time you can apply warmth with a washcloth for 10-15 minutes at a time several times a day and sometimes you can manually replace the knee cap by using your hand to move the knee outward.  A veterinarian can show you how to do this.  Also, you may obtain an anti-inflammatory as needed for the pain from your veterinarian.  If he is not experiencing pain but simply "hopping" every now and again it may be the case that the patella is not luxated except every once in a while.  A good evaluation by a veterinarian is needed. hope this helps.
