I have a 14 year old chiuaua that just started having seizures. First one Sept. 30th at 6:00pm, second one Next day Oct. 1st at 4:30pm, and one this morning Oct. 2nd at 7:30am, and one at 8:30pm also. Not sure what to do, dont have the money to see a vet yet. Seizures last about 30 seconds and then he is back up like normal in about 2 to 3 minutes. His legs stiffen up and he seems to stay awake.

I would suggest in this case that a trip to your vet is absolutely necessary. Unfortunately in older pets seizures are much less likely to be those of a straight forward epilepsy condition. There is not much you can do at home for him and the more seizures he has the worse they will become and potentially the more damage they will cause. He needs a check by your vet and possibly blood work. He could be started on phenobarbitone to reduce the severity and frequency of the seizures. Hope that helps, David.

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
