Hair Loss on Ear and Now Eyes

My dog has been treated at home and by a vet for ear mites. Nothing works. One ear has lost almost all hair because he constantly is scratching it and 4 days ago he is losing hair around his eyes. Had little oozing welts so I put antibacterial lotion and they dried up but still dry and scaly looking...if it is a parasite, can I get it and lose my hair? How did my inside dog get a parasite?

This could be sarcoptic mange if its that itchy. It is transmissible to humans but doesnt mean you will definately contract it if it is this. I would suggest some skin scrapes by your vet to try and visualise the mite on a microscope. You will then need a prodict / shampoo that will kill the mite.

With loss of hair around the eyes, demodex mite would be a potential also although they rarely cause itching.

It sounds like he needs a full dermatology work up to try and find the cause of the problem.

    hope that helps

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
