We found a cat outside, and we're not sure if it was an indoor cat and an outdoor cat...it has on a collar, but not a name tag...how can you tell if it's an outdoor cat? It paws at the window and the door and it's friendly towards us...we're not sure what to do.

It sounds like this cat knows about houses and how to get in them! So it probably lives or has lived indoors. You could ask around your neighbours to see if someone has lost one. If it's been around for a long time, it may be lost or abandoned, in which case, depending on where you are, there are agencies which may take it in if you don't want to.
