my dog keeps hacking like something is in his throat, and nothing is coming out, is this a sign of heartworm?

Hi, I hope I can help you! Coughing can be a sign of heartworm. Is your pet on Heartworm preventative? is he tested annually? Dry coughing can also be a sign of bordetella and collapsing trachea. Has he been to the boarder? groomer? or dog park recently? do you walk with a leash or harness? What breed of doggie is your pet? Thanks and I hope he gets better!

Coughing is a symptom of many diseases. Heartworm Disease being one of them.  If you do not have your pet on a Heartworm Preventative then getting him/her tested is necessary to determine his/her status.  If you do have your pet tested annually and haven't missed/skipped any pills then there are other diseases that may be causing the cough.  Heart Disease, Collapsing trachea, reverse sneezing and pneumonia to name a few.  I would strongly recommend that you take your pet to a Veterinarian to confirm what might be going on. Some diseases that cause coughing can be life threatening.  Good luck.
