vomiting and weight loss

We are having difficulty in getting a correct diagnosis for my 13-year old Ragdoll Cat. Sassy has a history of Kidney issues since a kitten. Therefore we are constantly testing her levels. On presciption canned and dry for IBD. Recently started having vomiting issues again. Has lost weight. In December started periordically vomiting liquid with signs of blood. Had complete blood work done, urinalysis and x-ray. Kidney levels had risen but still okay. Rest of blood work and tests fine. X-ray showed one kidney larger than the other, which has been her history. Tried sulcrafate with pepcid. Two doses and she has sudden onset of diarrhea and lost her appetite. Stopped meds. Finally settled down after a few weeks. Ultrasound just performed. Initial diagnosis was gastric lymphoma. Then 4 days later, the aspiration was not enough of a sample and the test can back inconclusive. Now it is being suggested that she has an inflammation. Suggested treatment is to put her back on sulcrafate with pepcid which I can not do to her again. Any ideas from what I've mentioned of what could be going on? I've been searching all kinds of stuff trying to find anything. Thanks for your time.

Hi, it sounds like you've been having a tough time with this. It's a complicated picture, and difficult to make very specific suggestions without seeing her entire history. Gastric inflammation is associated with kidney dysfunction, in which case symptomatic treatment as you've described should help. If there's a suspicion of lymphoma that's a different matter. I see it that you have 2 choices- you either pursue a defnitive diagnosis or rule out of lymphoma, or treat symtomatically with sucralfate and don't have any more diagnostic work done. It's a very difficult decision for you, but i wouldn't discount the sucralfate because of what happened before- it may have been unrelated. Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

Thanks for your input. It has been difficult and very confusing. Right now, I'm just trying to settle her stomach with chicken stew diet. Almost 24 hours and we haven't vomited yet. That's how I mark our progress! Thanks again. Luanne

My 11 year old cat Nixon has the same symptoms. We've been through ALL the tests, we did the pepcid and the sulcrafate and at least four other meds. No effect! He has lost weight rapidly. His vomit changed from sludge to pure liquid. His appetite started out ravenous and went to nonexistent. Just yesterday, I took him to the Dr. because I thought all hope was lost. He used to be 11 pounds. In the past six months he's gone from 8 to 6.5. But when I took him out of his carry cage to be weighed, he purred, loudly!! I knew then that he'd be going home!! It's like he was saying, "I'll get better...it's not my time". A new Dr. saw Nixon and gave him two shots: a shot of fluids (which he said would make him feel better) and another shot (according to the invoice) called Depomedrol. But, the Dr. called it something else...cortizone or something similar..it ended in "zone". My head was spinning...cause he said it may or not be cancer, the shot may or not work, but if it did work then it would stop the vomitting, stop the diarhea and increase his appetite! It's only been one day...but the shots appear to be working!! Nixon's appetite improved yesterday, last night, this morning and and ten fold by tonight!!! And, no vomit and his stool has gone from pudding to pudding with a lil piece of cake...there's a bit of mass in there! Finally...after six months of Dr. visits and tests, I have a possible diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. You mentioned IBD - is that what you meant? Even so, I thought the shot(s) might be of some help to you. The Dr. said that if the shot worked then there was a gel they could give me to rub on the inside of Nixon's ear once or twice a day! My Dr. said there is also an oral mixture they could make up to taste like Tuna Fish, but I dig the ear rub! I hope this helps and I hope your kitty gets better soon!
