My horse has a patch of skin that fell off about 2 inches by 3 inches big. It is down to the muscle. What should I do. Can I put an antibacterial cream or ointment on it? Should I be worried? There was a small cut in the area where the skin fell off, (an injury from a few weeks ago.

This could be a normal healing reaction as it is following an injury, but if the muscle is exposed you should probably get a vet to examine the lesion. Sometimes normal healing tissue can be mistaken for muscle, so if it's smooth and pink it may be granulation tissue which is part of a slow contracting healing process. It's a fairly large lesion though so i would hold back from the ointment until you're sure exactly what's going on. If there is exposed muscle tissue it wouldn't be a good idea to put cream directly onto that.

Thank you for such a quick response. This is a wonderful website and I plan to inform my friends with pets about it. Ben's (my horses name)patch on his hind quarter seems to be improving. Could you expain why this would have happened? Someone thought it could be his body rejecting dead skin where his old injury was. Could this be it. Also we live in northern Maine and it has been bitterly cold the past couple of weeks, could it have been frost bite from laying on the snow?

It sounds like the dead skin scenario that your friend described. Horses have circulatory systems designed to withstand cold temperatures so the snow shoudn't cause a problem. Glad you like the website, thanks!
