tetanus is cause by clostridial spores and infection generally occurs through wound contamination, and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. So yes it is possible. When did he stand on the nail?

He stepped on the rusty nail 2 days ago in the a.m., should I get him a tetnus shot if there is such a thing for dogs?

Tetanus antitoxin is available but I would expect you would have seen symptoms of tetanus by now if there was a problem. However, if he stepped on a nail i would be worried about bacterial infection and potentially debris in the wound. It may be worth just getting him checked anyway.
