Itching & Scratching

I have a 6 month old puppy I got from a rescue centre when he was 5 months old - since neutering he keeps scratching himself and biting himself all of the time - despite not having fleas and his skin looking clear. He is creating bald patches where he has been biting and clawing. He is also now scared of vets and having sudocream put on. Please help, what can I do to stop him scratching and gnawing himself excessively and how can I gain him to go to a vet again?

Hi there, thanks for your question. Whereabouts is your puppy scratching/biting the most? This information can help narrow down possibilities. The most likely diagnoses for why your puppy is so itchy is mange (mite infestation), fleas and environmental allergy. There are 2 types of mites- one contagious and one that is already in the dog's skin but can flare up in times of stress, however minor the stress (eg. anaesthesia/surgery). I understand you cannot see fleas on your pup but this is still a possibility, especially if he is not on any prescription flea control. Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva so even one flea bite can trigger a reaction. He may also have an allergy to something in the environment- house dust-mites, grass, etc. Your vet can check for mites with a skin scraping and a blood test. Also I would advise putting him on a good veterinary flea treatment regularily, and obtaining a gentle shampoo from the vet. Also think about whether he has had any products applied lately (shampoos, flea treament) that may have triggered a reaction. As for taking him to the vet, it may be something that you just need to do in this situation to resolve the problem. He can be sedated for the skin scraping. If your vet practice doesn't mind, you can take him in a couple of times and sit in the waiting room with him for a few mins without actually seeing the vet to make him understand that it's not always bad!! Please bear in mind that if he does have mites or fleas, these are contagious (to both dogs and people in the case of mites) so please keep him away from other dogs until confirmed otherwise, and please practice good hygeine when you are handling him. Hope this helps and please do not hesitate to reply with more questions.

I'm not a dr, but my JRM has had itching problems also. She would bite and scrach...she was raw in so many places...it was really nasty. Thru trial and error we found she was allergic to wheat gluten...a product of chunky dog food and cat food...the canned chunky. After a few days of this type of dog food and she'd be itching like crazy!

My dog is doing the same thing. I was thinking of giving her benedryl to stop her itch. Not sure what else to do... besides taking her to the vet. I want to try to control it before I spend all the money at the vets

I have a pug and she was itching an scratching so bad it was driving us all crazy! Come to find out, she is allergic to wheat. Try your itching and scratching dogs on a gluten free food, we use Canadae brand. Give it two weeks and you will know, our dog stopped scratching and was much better!

I had the same problem with all three of my pitbulls they all got what they call red mange which is mites and I didnt know then but people can get them to only they call it scabbies. they had scratched and scratched until they were almost bald and boy they smelt like dirty feet. I didnt take them in to get scraped i already knew what to do and I went down and got a big bottle of t=tree oil and bathed them in that then sprayed them once a week until the hair came back and they were not iching any more.
