Blood in stool can be the result of many different conditions, including, intestinal parasites. If your pet is acting lethargic he can be anemia and there may be anything from a intestinal preferation or an obstruction. Please, please, please take your pet to your RDVM. I would recommend a fecal test, PCV/TP, and radiographs. The fecal test will look for intestinal parasites. The radiograph can look for obstuctions and ulcers. The PCV/TP is a blood test that checks for anemia. Thank you and I hope your doggie gets better.

kristina, thank you for your quick response......actually a dog food recall was issued and it turns out that our charley was poisoned with salmonella. my sisters other dog, emma, started showing signs today of stiffness and then got to where she couldn't get up at all. they are both at the vet on I.V.'s. Do you think they could potentially die from this? charley is now eating a small bit. emma, to early to tell. i'm worried for her because it's hit her central nervous system now.

I am sorry to hear about your pets! I know this must be difficult. It is always hard to have a pet in the hospital.

To answer your question: yes, Salmonella and the particular serotype that is in "Mar's" produced foods can be fatal. I am very sorry, but, there is always hope. I am also not there to see your pets, so I can not really give you a adiquit evaluation. I would say that if Charley is eating that is great news especially if he is eating on his own!
