My dog has bad swelling on the tip of her ear and wounds and bald patches on her body from scratching, she has had flea shampoo and a flee collar and nothing is working is there something more serious wrong with her that could kill her?

    Hi there,

In my experience Flea shampoos are extremely irritant and will make the skin itchy themselves. Also flea collars are a little dated now when it comes to flea preventaion. They usually contain amitraz and only works locally around the collar. Quite often the skin will go bald where the collar has been with this drug also.

I recommend monthly Frontline spot on application to rid your pet of fleas. It works really well

The swelling on the tip of the ear doesnt sound like a primary flea related problem. It may be a blood blister (hematoma) caused by repetitive trauma (from scratching)

    Hope that helps, David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
