hiccups/convulsing

  • Gizmo

My dog, started doing this hiccup/convulsion like thing the other night. He doesn't appear to be in any pain he's had this before and is tongue seems to be a little greyish or purple compared to the normal pinkish red. Though less he still is eating & drinking. I'm in China and don't feel I can get him the proper care. Any suggestions appreciated. What's wrong with him?

    Hi

It sounds like your dog could have had an episode of reverse sneeze sydrome. This is a period of shorting when dogs are attempting to clear the mucus from their sinuses - read more about it in my article here:

This would also fit with the tongue going a bit pale during the episode, as the increased vagal tone would cause a bradycardia (slow heart rate), leading to inadequate oxygenation of the extremities such as the tongue.

The good news is, if it is Reverse Sneeze Syndrome, then there is nothing to worry about, it doesn't require treatment.
